Articles – A1.1

Italian articles agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the noun they accompany. Choosing the correct article depends on the gender of the noun and the first letters of the following word.

Articles are the little words like 'the' or 'a'. In Italian, these words change depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural, and what letter the noun starts with.

How to Determine Gender

Most Italian nouns follow predictable patterns for gender:

Usually Masculine

  • Nouns ending in -o: il ragazzo, il libro, il tavolo
  • Nouns ending in -ore: il dottore, il colore, il professore
  • Days of the week: il lunedì, il martedì (except la domenica)

Usually Feminine

  • Nouns ending in -a: la ragazza, la casa, la pizza
  • Nouns ending in -zione: la stazione, la lezione, la nazione
  • Nouns ending in -tà: la città, la libertà, l'università

⚠️ Watch Out!

  • Some -a endings are masculine: il problema, il cinema, il programma
  • Some -o endings are feminine: la mano, la radio, la foto
  • Nouns ending in -e can be either: il cane (m), la notte (f) — you must memorize these!

Tips for Learning

1

Always learn nouns WITH their article: 'il libro' not just 'libro'. This helps you remember the gender naturally.

2

When in doubt, check the ending: -o is usually masculine, -a is usually feminine.

3

The article l' is used for BOTH masculine and feminine nouns before vowels — context tells you the gender.

4

Practice with common objects around you: la sedia, il tavolo, la finestra, il telefono.
